The northern coastline of Samaná hides one of the Dominican Republic’s most guarded marvels, a network of limestone caves that serve as a living archive of pre-Columbian history. Disembark into a secluded cove, disturbed only by a select few yachts each year, and visitors are instantly transported to a realm untouched by time. Find yourself deliberately meandering along the water-hewn pathway between towering limestone cliffs, sculpted by centuries of wind and tide. Sunlight filters through in shifting fragments, guiding you toward the concealed mouth of the cave.

Inside, the walls bear the delicate carvings and ochre markings of the Taíno people, messages pressed into stone, utilising natural pigment, with each symbol a quiet defiance against erosion. Accompanied by an expert guide, hand-selected for your party, can read the stones like a manuscript, sharing both local lore and archaeological insight.

When your subterranean exploration draws to a close the day suddenly unfolds entirely to your design. The beach can be reserved solely for you and guests leaving the yacht’s culinary team and staff to devise an afternoon specifically for you. Therefore, as you emerge from the cave, you are greeted by the silhouette of a fluttering canopy, below a table appears, which is meticulously set for lunch. The air is perfumed with fresh seafood caught only hours before, with pineapples being carefully clipped from the safety of their rosette of leaves to curate a Caribbean inspired cocktail.

As the afternoon drifts towards dusk, your guide invites you to linger a little longer in the company of the island’s flavors by sampling locally aged rum, with its depth revealing the patience of decades. The yacht’s tender waits discreetly offshore, ready to return you to your floating residence as golden hues spill over the horizon.

History, nature, and rare access converge to create more than an itinerary; they shape a memory that exists entirely outside the confines of time. And for those who travel the world in search of the truly exceptional, this hidden corner of the Dominican Republic presents an experience at the summit of sophistication.

Columbus named Samaná Bay the Bay of The Arrows and there are still signs mounted in the area, portraying true historic significance.
